Stem cells offer enormous promise to transform medicine and science. While early research focused primarily on stem cells derived from embryonic and fetal sources, it is increasingly accepted that stem cells found in the adult body have significant therapeutic potential. These adult stem cells are recruited to areas of injury to assist in the natural tissue repair process through dynamic secretion of pro-regenerative trophic factors and cytokines. An important advantage of stem cells from adult donors is that they have an advanced saftey profile as compared to fetal and embryonic tissues.



Neuronyx has developed a unique population of human adult bone marrow-derived stem cells (hABM-SCs) and processes for its isolation and expansion. Our hABM-SCs have demonstrated efficacy in animal models of myocardial infarction, spinal cord injury and stroke. These important developments are the subject of patent applications. It is noteworthy that the inability to expand adult stem cells to the quantities needed for clinical development and commercialization has been a major technical barrier associated with their pharmaceutical development. Using our process, Neuronyx can produce up to 1 x 1017 cells from a single bone marrow aspirate in four passages without the need for immortalizing agents or a murine feeder layer. This level of expansion should provide Neuronyx with the ability to produce commercial quantities of pharmaceutical-grade hABM-SCs.





Our lead program, in collaboration with Centocor/Johnson & Johnson, is focused on the use of hABM-SCs for cardio-related disease applications. We have conducted studies that demonstrate the preclinical efficacy of hABM-SCs in improving cardiac function following myocardial infarction. Additional studies are currently in progress. We are also conducting research relating to other indications including spinal cord injury, stroke, diabetes and musculo-skeletal disorders..
